Good News Story

Soraya Parkes
Soraya registered with YTS earlier this year after moving to Whangarei from Kaitaia. She met with her coordinator and as part of her registration completed her needs analysis. Soraya and her co-ordinator discussed the benefits of getting her Learners Licence, so she completed the preparation phase of the Learner Licence program, participated and passed!

Soraya met with Career Services onsite and together they identified that her career interest areas were the Army, Early Childhood as well as a love for the outdoors and Environmental issues. Soraya also attended an Induction Day to find out about the youth training opportunities she could try.

Using the information from her career services interview Soraya’s co-ordinator guided her towards the Environment Studies Course at North Tec. Her passion for the environment combined with what she heard about the Environmental Studies course excited her so much that she enrolled at North Tec and started studying fulltime that same week.

Soraya was also keen to get a job while she was studying – and guess what? Of course she was successful! Soraya gained a part time job at Burger King which she absolutely loves too!

Congratulations Soraya!!

induction days

• Induction Days are held once a month and usually run between 10am and 1pm.  The focus is on careers & jobs.  Come and meet the team! 

• Meet local employers, training providers, WINZ Work Brokers, Recruitment Officers for Police & Armed Forces and Careers NZ who are the specialists in careers information. 

• Come and get information about both FREE and FEE PAYING training, University and job vacancies - find out what’s right for you!

• Check out what’s available in Whangarei and in other places around the country.

• Find out how you can access grants and scholarships, listen to local employers and learn about the awesome opportunities that are here for young people. 

• Training providers and guest speakers change each month so all the information is up-to-date!
